Taking Action...

Image result for chch public hospital
Throughout the last 2 weeks, we have been working on our PBL project and attempting to make a positive impact in our community. Our original plan was to go and visit the pediatric ward at Christchurch public hospital so we could read them Christmas stories and talk to them about their lives in and around the hospital. So on Tuesday the 21 of November, we bussed over to the hospital arriving at 10:10am. we then asked for directions to the pediatric ward (Wards 21 and 22) so we could read our stories. However, once we arrived in the ward and had been sitting down for hours the playroom manager told us that the nurse we talked to forgot to tell us about some of the steps we would need to take in order to see the children. This nurse then gave us a phone number we had to ring and the person on the other side would walk us through the missing steps.

Last week we attempted to call the number only to be sent straight to answerphone. We then called later in the week with Me being ignored, Amy getting hung up on and Mercedes being the lucky one and getting the information. The woman on the other side of the phone gave us her email address so she could walk us through what we had to do. She only told us that we needed to do police checks, CYPP training and fill out privacy policies papers.

We then talked to our teachers and other classmates to attempt to fix what problems we had come across. We ended up combining with another group who came across the same issues. We have come up with raising money for the Ronald Mcdonald house and make the kids dreamcatchers, Christmas card and gifting them soft toys.

This weekend on Saturday the 2nd of December 2017 Me and 6 others are running a car wash for the community to raise the money. There will also be 2 bins to donate stuff. One for any soft toys like Teddy Bears, and the other for canned food and other non-perishable items.

The Wish Makers Very Important Project

13-14 November 2017
Hello, My name is Hannah-Mae and I am apart of the group Wish Makers with Amy, Mercedes and Danielle. We have decided that we are going to help the children at Christchurch Public Hospital who suffer from Terminal and/or long-term illnesses. We have chosen to raise some funds to help with the children's treatment and make them smile by spending time with them, We are hoping this will make them forget about their Illness for just a moment and make them feel like they are a normal kid. We are also hoping that we can make a Christmas for them to remember.

Here are some Websites We have used in our investigations.

LGBTQ+ people deserve rights in all countries.

Why be racist, sexist, homophobic or transphobic when you could just be quiet. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, better known as LGBT, deserve rights in all countries, as nobody can help the way they feel toward others, we are all the same on the inside, they don't judge us so why should we judge them and they are being forced to be someone they aren’t.

Some people can't help the way they feel towards others. That is because not everyone has the same taste in men/women as you do. They have their own feelings and emotions that make them feel like themselves. For instance, when you fall in love with someone you feel like you belong and that you are wanted by the other person in the relationship. This is the same for LGBT people, but they like people of the same gender, someone of their physiological birth gender or they just don't care. Shown by a scientific study it is all because of their genetic code from their opposite-sex parent. So if a man is gay it is a trait from his mother, therefore if a lady is a lesbian the trait is from her father. Scientific studies also showed that “The hereditary link of homosexuality has long been established, but scientists knew it was not a strictly genetic link because there are many pairs of identical twins who have differing sexualities.” So it is just the way they are born, which is why they are and like different types of people. They also deserve the same rights as a heterosexual would because we are all the same on the inside.

We are all the same on the inside and nothing can change that fact. We all have brains, bones and organs. Just because someone doesn't like the opposite gender to them doesn't change this fact. For comparison, a heterosexual has 206 bones in their body right. So does someone that is apart of the LGBT community. Every heterosexual person has a brain, LGBT people have brains but they work and process things uniquely. Just because you don't like the way they think, it doesn't give you the right to discriminate against them and strip them of their rights. They don't judge us for liking people of the opposite gender or wanting to stay our biological birth gender, So why should we judge them for being themselves. It's not necessary.

Remember when you were little, did you ever get bullied for being different? Did you ever want just someone to accept you? I did. If you did, then this is what the LGBT community battles with and for. They just want to be accepted for being themselves and for expressing what they like. Here is another question for you. Have you ever made someone feel less than human? Like they didn't belong. That they were a mistake? That feeling of hatred is what the LGBT people in 74 countries get every day. In 74 countries around the world, these people are being killed, beaten, sentenced to death, used as an excuse for murder and/ or assault. This is all because of people who have an established mindset therefore not want to accept them as part of this world. Throughout the 74 countries, 13 of these will sentence you to death for being apart of the LGBT community. In 17 banns are in place against the promotion of LGBT communities and/or identities. But to my surprise, an astronomical total of 40 countries retain a “Gay Panic” clause, which enables people to use it as a defence for committing crimes such as assault and/or murder as previously stated, just by saying that they were provoked because the person was Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual. And now I will share with you something that Donald Trump's Nominee for the federal judgeship in Texas stated. Mateer said during a Colorado lawsuit involving a Transgender girl. “It just really shows you how Satan’s plan is working. "Satans plan is referring to the transgender children of the world. He has also said, "In Colorado, a public school has been sued because a first grader, and I forget the sex, she's a girl who thinks she's a boy or a boy who thinks she's a girl, it's probably that, a boy who thinks she's a girl, and the school said, 'Well she's not using the girls restrooms.' Just to follow up on the last sentence, the people in the LGBT community are being forced to be someone they aren’t all for the purpose of trying to fit in.

How would you like it if your mother said you couldn't be yourself because you were “different”. Or how would you feel if your father told you to stop being yourself because he didn't want you to be that way? Or your religion said it’s not ok to feel that way about someone or something? This feeling is how people who are Transgender, Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian etc. feel. People who are Transgender don't feel comfortable in their body, and yet people make them feel bad about their current body forcing them to only think of one way out. “Bi” people like both male and female, this makes it difficult for them to try to feel any emotion towards people when they are at social events because they are not “welcome” or they “don't belong”. They begin to feel this way because they get abuse and nasty comments from people and other family members, all because they feel it is necessary to make them feel like they mean nothing to the world. Witch to me that is being less than human to do this to someone who is being themselves. People are the way they are because it is how they feel and express themselves, it's how they want to live their lives and I believe that the LGBT community deserves rights in all countries. They deserve the freedom we take for granted and the lives that heterosexuals live recklessly and carelessly.

Now I'm not saying that heterosexuals are bad. I’m just saying that people in this mindset often find it difficult to understand how these people are feeling because they haven't experienced it. They haven’t dealt with the same nasty comments or the same nasty actions towards them. Heterosexual people possibly haven’t heard the terms like ‘You're one of those faggots’, ‘switch hitter’, ‘Tranny’ or ‘Celesbian’ used against them. But the chances are they have used this slang against someone in a harming intent.

LGBT people deserve rights in all countries because nobody can help the way they feel toward others, we are all the same on the inside, they don't judge us so why should we judge them and they are being forced to be someone they aren’t. If being gay was a choice, so what. Most people choose to be impertinent and they can still get married.

Old buildings should be preserve for future generations to enjoy.

Screenshot 2017-10-24 at 8.54.41 AM.png Old buildings should be preserved and kept in mint condition for our younger generation because it makes it easier to learn history, we can show the new generation what things were like when we were kids, It attracts tourists.

The gains of keeping our history and the world's history in mint condition shows that we care for history and what it has to offer. It will be easier to access ancient artifacts in the near future for kids history classes. This will be because the places that are kept preserved will be easier to document in photos. For instance, The Pyramids, The Eiffel Tower. If these buildings are kept in good condition, the younger generation has a chance to see it/them before they themselves possibly destroy it.

It shows we care about our younger generations knowledge, yes, But it also gives us the opportunity to keep our memories and show our kids, kids what it was like when we were their age.

Fishermen should have to pay for every fish they catch.

I disagree that fishermen should have to pay for every fish they catch. As it will cost to much if you fished for a restaurant or a supermarket.

It will create less opportunity for seafood dishes like smoked salmon or tuna and would cause a lot of riots around commercial fishing. Also fish is a resource some families rely on, so to put a price on fishing would be putting a price on some families lives.

But in return it will help create an ecosystem in the ocean and keep more fish alive and well for future generations, because there would be fewer fishermen that would be fishing.

Brainstorm + Artist Models

In this picture I was told to brainstorm about the things I care about.

So I started with a General topic of music and branched it off to Instruments.
Another topic I chose was Family and friends and Darkness.

This is the start of finding what drives me to make art and what inspires me to make art.

My Risk or Challenge

New Years Day
Image result for david lenard clemett

Have you ever lost someone so important to you that it risked how you would show your emotions? Have you? I will tell you now, It hurts. It's challenging and scary, I was awoken by a bright flash of white light and the smell of a nice warm breakfast on the 1st of January 2011. I felt slightly nauseous, which signalled something was up. I was slightly startled when I checked the time, It was around 9:30 am. My parents never let me sleep in that late. I got up and slowly walked down to the usually brightly lit lounge, it was dark this time. The bright colours had faded; I could see my whanau was sitting there, just sitting there, like they were waiting for me. I went and sat down on the soft, fluffy, rug beside my cousin and brother. I could tell something was up.

Dad had been in the hospital for a while and it was the day we were going to see him. He recently underwent his 3rd heart surgery and was in the recovery unit, or at least I thought he was. Little did I know that what my mother was just about to tell me was going to make my life as a 9 year old a lot harder. It was right after Christmas that he went into the E.R. Weak, pale, high temperature and blurred vision. It is something to be wheeled into a hospital, but it is worse seeing one of your family members being wheeled in and you can't do anything about it.

When I sat down I felt like my world was about to be shaken and beaten. I felt like something was happening and no one was going to tell me. It felt like time had frozen. I felt like I was being challenged and threatened. I didn't feel any emotions, just emptiness. It felt like I was the only one in the room. I could slightly see my brother through blurred eyes and wondered why he looked sad and alone. No one took any notice of him, it made me riveting that they “didn’t care” about him, That they only cared about dad’s baby girl. I felt isolated at that exact point in time.

Then mum said the words I wish she never had to say. She said “ I’m sorry my baby girl. But dad isn't coming home. He passed away this morning.” Everyone started crying, But all I could here was a voice saying ‘Why why why. It wasn't his time. He should be here with me. But he wasn't. I lost my appetite and started balling my eyes out, as I had just lost my hero, a father, and a best friend in one.

The whole family started hugging me and asking if I was OK, telling me it will be OK and making me feel enclosed, claustrophobic, uneasy and dizzy. I could see everyone helping and hugging each other. I could also see Aiden just sitting there oblivious to everything that was going on. I could hear the sound of family members crying out. All I wanted was to be alone, all I wanted was to see him again, all I wanted was for mum to be happy. I was scared and felt alone in the dark void I now called home, I wanted him back so I could keep my life on track. But it was too late. For the next week, I had to be force fed and refused to go see or talk to anyone outside the house.

I have now learnt to empathise and sympathise others who may and are going through the same thing I went through. I also now know how to deal with these problems and have started opening up about it. As I said it hurts.

Music Term 3

This term we are doing solos in music.

My choice of song is Boulevard of Broken Dreams By Green Day.

The song speaks from the point of view of American Idiot's main character, Jesus of Suburbia, and is a moderate mid tempo song characterised by sombre and bleak lyrics. This is in contrast to the previous track on the album, "Holiday", which illustrates Jesus of Suburbia's high of being in The City. MTV's Green Day Makes a Video described "Holiday" as a party, and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" as the subsequent hangover.
I have chosen to play this on the drums

I chose this song because it has a different meaning to me and I interpret it differently to what others do.

The Outsiders Essay

The way that the outsiders novel By S.E Hinton is portrayed through the eyes of a character is a great idea. The reader is taking on the role of Ponyboy Curtis and being apart of a gang using First person Point of view. For example the book open with “ I stepped into the sunlight from the darkened movie house with two things on my mind, Paul Newman and a ride home.” so instantly we can see we are seeing the book through a main character because of the  of language, E.g I, My. This shows that even though we are a separate entity we are still able to connect with character on a personal level through the P.O.V used and how it it used in novels compared to films. S.E Hinton’s purpose of this was to connect us to the main character and teach us about how life is when you are apart of a gang, And to show us that Without caring parents there is always someone there for you. S.E Hinton’s purpose of this was to connect us to the main character and teach us about how life is when you are apart of a gang, And to show us that Without caring parents there is always someone there for you.

The way symbolism was used had quite a good impact on the way I now think of things. For instance, The Windrixville church. This symbolises what Ponyboy and his family used to do before the incident. Symbolism is shown to help people represent other things and important messages in the text like the family, violence and many more. This technique can create a great impact when you  see it and realise what is being implied/ Read between the lines. The Author put this in to help keep the attention of the reader and make them theorise on what the symbol means to the main character and why they have it/found it. This can be linked to the movie where it is easier to see and theorise what is happening and why the character has/ found this symbol and what it means to them as well as we can see in the movie exactly what the symbol looks like and then hear the character explain it themselves which makes the symbol more important and relevant.

When reading the book It was interesting to read and pick up on some hidden meanings. I.E when Ponyboy tells Darry that he is fine and will fight even though he is sick and not in good condition to be fighting. Or when Darry is being “Mean”. He is really only looking out for Ponyboy and wanting to take care of him. This makes the story more repeatable because humans will say something while they mean something else. This also helps us understand that without some hidden meaning the story wouldn’t keep the reader's attention as easy. For instance if i was to write that i’m OK when I stated earlier on in the page that i’m not, would you keep reading to see why I said it. See what i mean it urges the reader to find out why this happened. The purpose of this to to make the story believable and interesting while still getting your point across, Something that S.E Hinton did  Phenomenally well at the age of 15-17. The technique was used very well and has been used in multiple different stories like in kids books. Fiction and nonfiction. This technique is a very interesting choice but works well in stories, movies and in real life. Which brings me to my next point of Word-Choice.

Word-Choice is a great aspect of a story and was an amazing feature of the Novel. For Instance, When Ponyboy says he is fine when he is sick and doesn't want to bother Darry. Or when Darry tells Ponyboy to start “Using his head”, so instead of Darry telling pony to think about things He says “Learn to use your Head”. This shows that gang life can be hard and have different slang/terms for things like Thinking,Fighting Etc. They generally mean the same thing as what we say, But it is a way for them to communicate. Hinton put this in to give us a little taste of slang other countries and gangs use compared to how us kiwis say things. It also helps us connect to the characters on more of a personal level if we know their lingo. This connects with reality quite well because we all live in different countries and have different ways of portraying messages to one another, so it shows us that people in the novel's settings speak differently and it’s normal to find it weird and/or interesting.

The Important techniques used in the written texts can create impact and possibly make us think about life and humanity more than before.

My selfie woodcut plan

My emotion I am trying to portray is annoyance because of the way society treats young people trying to express themselves. My most inspiring print maker is Kathe Kollowitz Because she contrasts the positive and negative quiet well and has inspiring work that is better than the other print makers i have come across. In my final work, I want to portray the annoyance I feel when my friends try to express themselves and get shut down by society. My next step is to sketch out the final picture and make a start on the print making.
